Planning The Most Thrilling Yosemite Trip With Your Kids
As parents, we are always looking for fun ways to immerse the little ones in nature, as touching grass in Minecraft just won’t cut it! Naturally, the first thought that comes to mind is taking them on hikes where they can breathe in clean air and see all kinds of plants and animals. But, as interesting as they are for us, children usually get bored of it rather quickly, or they stop mid-way because they’re tired. This puts quite a nip in the bud for your planning, doesn’t it? Well, as a mom myself, let me give you an idea your kids will really like, which doesn’t involve a lot of hiking. It’s time to plan the ultimate family-friendly Yosemite trip!
While the nature in Yosemite never fails to impress me, I actually have a strong bond with the place that always seems to draw me back to it. I grew up in Oakhurst, just 15 minutes away from the south entrance of Yosemite National. With that in mind, my family took me to the national park regularly, and the experience was amazing each time! As a matter of fact, my mom’s cabin was transformed into a vacation home, so if you’re looking for a place to stay near Yosemite that’s not a hotel or a campsite, this might be the perfect accommodation for you!
Now, as an adult, me and my little girl have tons of fun each time we visit Yosemite! Although we do hike for some time, considering I know the Park at the back of my hand, my daughter seems to forget all about it since I bring her to spots most visitors don’t have a clue they exist. That said, not sharing them with you would just be a crime! So, here are some of the most unique things to do when planning a trip to Yosemite with your kids.
Here are my favorite places to take my little one in Yosemite National Park!
Pioneer Yosemite History Center
Little kids and history aren’t the ideal combo – unless you turn everything into an actual story! They like to see and hear facts about places, people, and things rather than read about them, so consider the Pioneer Yosemite History Center as the ultimate place to make you the best storyteller in the world! Interestingly enough, this is one of the less-visited places in Yosemite. From my experience, it was practically deserted each time my daughter and I visited it. But this actually works in your favor!
The Pioneer Yosemite History Center is a collection of cabins and old memorabilia that shows the story of this place becoming a national park. What makes them so interesting to kids is that they can peep inside and see things left behind by pioneers, like beds, clothing, kitchen items, etc. To provide the ultimate storytelling experience, the historical signs will give you all the information you need so your kids can feel like they’re going through time!
2. Mariposa Grove
When planning your trip to Yosemite with your kids, Mariposa Grove must be on your list! While this is a hiking trail, it’s relatively easy to complete, and this area always seems to be filled with children. With that in mind, once your kid is done marveling at the soaring sequoia trees, they might even make some new friends along the way!
3. Wawona Golf Course
If you’re planning to visit Yosemite during the winter, be sure to stop by the Wawona Golf Course, especially during the snow season. This is one of the oldest golf courses in the US and is suitable for golfers of all levels. However, there’s a whole other reason why I’m including it on my list!
Namely, from late December until March, this place turns into a winter wonderland, posing an idyllic setting for your kids. You can do tons of snow activities here, from sledding to building all sorts of snowmen. If the weather gets too cold, visit the Wanona Market across the street to get some mittens, hand warmers, and snacks. Oh, and don’t miss out on the hot chocolate - ‘delicious’ doesn’t even begin to describe it!
4. Tunnel View
This is undoubtedly my favorite part of Yosemite! The Tunnel View is a must-stop whether you’re visiting the national park for the first or the hundredth time because its view is truly second to none! Given that it’s one of Yosemite’s most popular attractions, it’s usually quite crowded, but I have a tip for you that will make the experience special!
You should consider visiting Tunnel View during the off-season and go at sunrise. Getting your kids to wake up this early in the morning may feel like the biggest challenge in the world, but try to get them excited beforehand, as they will surely be in awe of the big moment. Once you and your kids see the sun rising behind the Half Dome, you will undoubtedly feel like you’ve stepped into a magical Disney movie!
5. Yosemite Valley
Finally, once you’ve seen the sunrise at Tunnel View, head to Yosemite Valley, which will take about an hour. From here, you can see the Swinging Bridge and continue your journey to the Yosemite Valley Chapel, which will take less than three minutes by car. Once you arrive, walk across the street, and you can see the Half Dome in the meadows where your kids can roam wild. You might even notice some deer running around if you get there early enough! Just pack an extra layer of clothing for the little ones – mornings can get quite chilly here.
As your last stop, check out Yosemite Valley Market and grab some lunch. Don’t forget to pick up a few souvenirs before you head home!
As you can see, Yosemite can provide a world of fun for the whole family, especially your kids! I have made some of my best memories here, so I hope you also have the same experience.
Speaking of memories, you probably won’t like to forget a single moment from your tip. So, why not commemorate it with a professional photo shoot? My mom used to do this with me when I was young, and now I do the same with my daughter. Looking back on our adventures together is always heartwarming, so having a session together is an excellent option to consider.
