Magical Winter Trip Yosemite Guide: What You Need to Know
Snow covered towering pines in a Yosemite winter wonderland
As a wedding and family photographer in Yosemite, winter is one of my absolute favorite times. Yosemite transforms into a magical winter wonderland, draped in a blanket of snow! There’s nothing like experiencing Yosemite during the winter season. I truly believe everyone should see it with the snow at least once, it's like stepping straight into Narnia!
The snowiest time is usually late December through February, with January being the peak of the winter wonderland. As your local photographer and guide (and the person who shares all the best secrets!), I've got the best spots just for you, so you'll want to read this guide right now. Let's jump straight into some local tips!
Tips on how to prepare like a local for your winter yosemite trip
Gas ⛽
Go into the park with a full tank of gas (or you might be calling AAA, if you can even get service)! If you need to fill up in the park you’ll be looking at $6-$8/a gallon.
Local Tip: If you’re coming in through Oakhurst (Highway 41 to the South Gate), stop by
Chukchansi Casino Fuel Station &Travel Center for the best fuel prices. The Casino is on Native American land, therefore the Native tribe is able to offer gas without taxes! Translation: it’s the cheapest gas around!Winter Hikes & Road Conditions 🚧
If you’re tackling a route with steep drop-offs, sketchy footing, or unpredictable weather, know your limits and be prepared! Research your trail before you go to the park, bring the right equipment and never underestimate the power of nature.
Local Tip: Call Yosemite National Park to check on hiking conditions before your trip and come prepared (and warm!) Hikes are limited in Yosemite during this time of year, many areas are closed due to snow fall and icy conditions.
Cell Service 📱
Cell service is inconsistent within Yosemite National Park. Before your road trip download everything you’ll need, like maps, AllTrails routes, reservation passes, and hotel or Airbnb check-in info. For the parents, plan to download any movies onto the iPad. Trust me, you don’t want to be that person frantically trying to load directions with zero bars.
Local Tip: It’s possible there is service at Tunnel View and in some areas in Yosemite Valley. I get strong service at The Yosemite Valley Chapel and near the Yosemite Village Market!
Tire chains 🚙
Yosemite’s roads get icy, so drive carefully. During snowfall, you are not allowed to enter Yosemite without a 4x4/AWD + Cables/Chains in your vehicle.
Local Tip: If you need to purchase chains, do not buy them in the mountains or you’ll end up paying $200-$500. Buy them in Merced, Madera, or Fresno ($60-80), if you don’t use them, return it!
Essential winter layers 🧤 🧣
It's always better to be a little over-prepared than shivering and missing out on the fun. With night temps dropping as low as 15 degrees, make sure you have your beanie, some gloves, and hand warmers ready to go! This brand, HotHands is my go to and you can find at Target or Amazon here.
Must do winter activities & sights in yosemite
Now that you're prepped for the journey, it's time to dive into the thrill of your Yosemite winter escape! While the crowds stay home, you get to experience the park's magic firsthand. Here are some incredible, in-the-moment activities you and your family can experience! There’s even more awesome stuff in my downloadable guide. Don’t forget to comment at the end of my blog below to receive it!
- Have you ever been snowshoeing? Okay this is your moment to try it, especially if you're not a big snowboarder or skiing girly. It's so easy! The snowshoes spread your weight out, so instead of sinking, you get to "float" right on top of the snow.
- If you're a skiier or snowboarder, Badger Pass Ski Area is your spot! You'll be boarding or skiing at California’s first-ever ski resort. So cool!
Ice skating
Lace up your skates and prepare to be amazed! Ice skating at Curry Village is a must-do, with the iconic Half Dome watching over you. The views are just... omg!
Local Tip: Curry Village Pizza Deck has a bar and did you know you’re allowed to go on a stroll with an open can? Meaning, if you take your lunch with you to the top of Upper Yosemite Falls, you can crack open a beer (or a bottle of tequila) legally!
Bridalveil Fall Trail in Winter
Craving that perfect winter moment? The Bridalveil Fall Trail delivers! A quick, 8-minute stroll takes you right to the base of this majestic waterfall, where the winter chill turns the famous spray into a gorgeous, frozen spectacle. Just be sure to wear sturdy boots as the ice can be extra slippery!
Mist Trail to Vernal and Nevada Falls
Warning: This is not for the faint of heart! When Glacier Point and Taft Point roads close, an epic, all-day adventure awaits. The only path forward is the strenuous, 9.5-mile 4-Mile Trail or a tough cross-country ski from Badger Pass. Get ready for a challenge and a reward that few see. Be sure to always check trail conditions first!
